Abstract :
This paper introduces the architecture of a programmable ATM adapter using PROTEUS, a special purpose FPGA for high speed telecommunication circuits. A design environment for the programmable ATM adapter is also described. We propose an algorithm and a circuit configuration for the ATM shaping function established on the programmable ATM adapter. Several circuits were designed and implemented on our trial system. Finally, the results of a multimedia network experiment using a trial programmable ATM adapter is shown. This paper confirms that two-way file transfer of graphic data over 100 Mb is not only possible but problem-free at the actual rate of 25 Mbps between ATM terminals without a rate control mechanism
