Abstract :
A new histogram modification technique for image enhancement based on a model of the visual system is introduced. The model was derived from measurements of the nonlinear characteristic of the visual system reported in the literature. Two previously proposed methods, namely Cobra´s quadratic hyperbolization and Mokrane´s transformation, are special cases of this more general technique. An example is provided showing that images processed with the new technique may have greater intelligibility than when processed with existing methods of histogram modification
