Abstract
The design of a W-band gyrotron operating at the third harmonic cyclotron frequency is presented. In order to tackle the mode competition problem, a cylindrical cavity with an iris structure is used. The gyrotron is designed to operate at the low loss, circular symmetric TE02 mode. When the gyrotron is driven by a 45 kV, 4 A electron beam with orbital-to-axial velocity ratio equal to 1.5, an output power of 25.7 kW at 94.8 GHz is predicted from PIC simulation, corresponding to an efficiency of 14.3%. The prototype tube has been constructed and the test is in progress.
