Abstract :
In this paper we investigate a block-level partitioning scheme suitable for ITU-T H.263 compressed video streams. The compressed video stream is split into two partitions and they are assigned different degrees of error protection for each depending on their importance. The first partition contains the source significant information such as header information and first few variable length codes (VLC) per block depending on the type of the picture. The rest of the VLCs in each block are transferred to the second partition. Convolutional coding is considered to provide unequal error protection (UEP) for the two partitions. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated over a correlated frequency selective channel closely matched to wideband code division multiple access (W-CDMA) down link parameters. Simulation results show an improvement in video quality compared to an equal error protection scheme and a reference scheme, without bandwidth expansion
