Abstract :
Vibration from propulsion and auxiliary machinery is a major problem in marine vessels. Presentation describes active mounting system that addresses resonance problem - being commercially developed by BAE systems. Resonance acts like structural amplifier to exacerbate problem and passive systems often have severely limited performance. Fully active machinery mounts can be used to tackle problems at source but can be expensive and impractical. A "smart spring" composite system satisfies practical requirements but complicates the controller design. Recent algorithmic development that targets harmonic vibration sources show great potential for high performance isolation
