Summary form only given. The National Science Foundation has established several mechanisms to support multidisciplinary research, education and training at the graduate and undergraduate level. The author discusses the engineering research centers (ERC), science and technology centers (STC), and integrated graduate education and research traineeship (IGERT) programs, and give examples of awards that contribute to the vitality of research and education activities in fields of interest.
