Abstract :
While the vision for the Connected Car has existed for some time, realizing it is proving a challenge. In this paper, we examine candidate car-mobile integration solutions which are necessary to deliver innovative advanced telematics services. We note the key role of the mobile in delivering these new services, primarily due to the rate of growth of mobile processing power and data rates. Further, the mobile acts as a hub for the user´s content, information and preferences. Based on this observation, we characterize how the mobile and the car should interact to realize the Connected Car. This is followed by an experience report of implementing a basic application using an advanced mobile-car integration technology - SmartDeviceLink. Finally, we conclude by noting deficiencies of current technologies and suggesting how the sector should evolve.
