Abstract
A new type of broadband single patch microstrip antenna, especially for IMT-2000 application is presented. By connecting a pair of small rectangular patches to the radiating edges of a rectangular main patch, a broadband operation can be achieved. With the proposed antenna design, an impedance bandwidth of 11.4% is obtained, which is as large as about 2.53 times that of the original rectangular microstrip antenna with no additional patches and any significant change or degradation is not observed. Details of the antenna design and experimental results are presented, as well as theoretical results obtained using the segmentation method coupled with the cavity model.
