Abstract
A tapered (lossy) dielectric slab backed by a sinusoidal conducting plane is studied as a paradigm of bouncing-ray chaos for 2D plane-wave scattering. A simple 2D ray analysis reveals a rich variety of possible ray paths, featuring chaos for almost all directions of incidence. Several interesting properties emerge, which suggest a number of possible applications.
