Abstract :
This paper presents a low phase noise LC VCO. The VCO adopts a switched current topology. Theoretical analysis is given to show how phase noise is optimized. The reduction of current tail´s 1/f noise and the elimination of fixed current bias voltage are the two main contributions to phase noise reduction. A 1.8-2.25 GHz VCO is implemented and measured for the proposed circuits, achieving phase noise at 1-MHz offset from a 2.01-GHz carrier of -125 dBc/Hz with a 2-V supply.
