  • Abstract
The evolution of access network technology has produced a new hybrid FTTH system called TWDMPON system. This system is the combination of time and wavelength multiplexing communication method. The time-based system is derived from the existing G/EPON and XGPON system while the latter is referred to the Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) technique. From the actual deployment perspective TWDMPON system should be able to coexist with the existing FTTH network. This is to ensure capitalization and investment optimization of the installed fiber network. This paper will discuss on the method and strategy for this to happen based on the analysis of wavelengths plan and the optical link loss measurement. In relation to that, a TWDMPON system has also been proposed on an FPGA platform that consists of an OLT, Optical Extender and ONUs. The results showed that the chosen wavelength plan for the TWDM system does not interfere with the existing FTTH system. Apparently, it also showed that it is feasible to integrate the proposed TWDMPON system with the existing FTTH system in the same network architecture while optimizing the optical amplifier´s configuration to extend the distance and total number of splits. This work is claimed as the first initiative towards realizing the coexistence of TWDMPON system in the actual FTTH network in Malaysia.
