Abstract
Improper coordination of ultra-high voltage direct current (UHVDC) protection and arrester parameter configuration may lead to high overvoltage above the insulation protection design level of arrester. Compared to high voltage direct current (HVDC) system, the UHVDC transmission system perplexes this problem due to its specificities-more complex structure, more operation modes, more transmission power and higher overvoltage level. Three typical overvoltage conditions are studied by theoretical analysis and simulation based on the actual control and protection strategy of Yunnan-Guangdong (YG) UHVDC transmission project. The simulation results show that the relationship between transmission power and the stress of V1-type arrester is nonlinear. Under different conditions, the effects of protection delay on the energy of neutral bus arresters may be opposite.
