Abstract :
This paper outlines the findings of a study into current and future requirements for enforcement technology to support Smart Motorways in England. Safe and effective operation of Smart Motorways relies on compliance being high with enforcement providing an important contribution to achieving this. Generally, the paper concludes that enforcement applications for Smart Motorways will be more varied and will be best served through competitive procurement of multifunctional systems or services. The study was performed through a key stakeholder consultation using interviews to elicit information and obtain knowledge. In turn this work enabled a technology roadmap to be prepared using the views of key stakeholders. Ongoing challenges are to satisfy regulatory stakeholders that public acceptance, data protection and privacy will be maintained. If the needs of all stakeholders can be met, the market for multifunctional enforcement technology is expected to be attractive to all participants, with lower procurement costs and higher volumes.
