Abstract :
This paper will present a method to fast-prototype a Battery Management System (BMS) using a model-based approach. Such an approach involves creating mathematical models of the battery as well as the high-voltage electronic components. The models are then used, along with typical driving profiles, within an offline simulation frame work called BMSSim to understand and test the dynamic effects of the whole system quicker and much more efficiently than traditional design methods that rely on using real components or test data. The performance of the BMS is further evaluated in more realistic real-time environments by deploying the software using a Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) test rig. As proof-of-concept, the paper will show 3 different case studies where the performance of the battery state-of-charge estimation, fault handling and power limits calculation is evaluated.
