Abstract
Presents four areas covering some of the advances in traffic management systems which have been used in the United States in the battle against urban congestion. In the first two areas, integrated systems and ramp metering, the authors discuss exceptional practices using available technology which are being promoted for routine implementation throughout the country. The last areas, video imaging for wide area vehicle detection and in-vehicle motorist information, represent two applications of advanced technologies for use in traffic management systems. As development continues in these areas, and as technology advances, these applications may become more widely used, providing even greater opportunities for applying advanced traffic management techniques throughout urban areas
