    A knowledge based scheduler has been developed to demonstrate how it is possible to have a system which will respond to novel situations by improvising rather than compromising when faced with a deviation from the expected train of events. The paper summarises the work performed, identifies the advantages of the knowledge based approach, considers achievements, suggests enhancements and reports on the possibilities of development and deployment of the system as an addition to the BAe Small Machined Parts Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS)
