Abstract :
The Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) is a shunt FACTS controller used for reactive power compensation. It can also be used to improve the voltage stability of the system. This paper presents a Newton power flow model of the (STATCOM). The STATCOM is operated in voltage and reactive power control modes. The STATCOM is connected via its coupling transformer. The switching losses of the STATCOM are also incorporated in this model. Multiple case studies with the IEEE 30-bus test network validate this.
