Abstract :
\´Smart\´ homes with “smart” things working together in the smart city as one coherent and dynamic system to help individuals make "smarter" decisions. This paper presents multi-disciplinary research from the HAT project and its extension, the HARRIET project, on the creation of the first ever Multi-sided Market Platform for the exchange of data enabled by the Internet-of-Things. This allows individuals to trade their personal data for personalised products and services in the future, and assists individuals to better understand their household consumption behaviour and make “smarter” decisions to plan and live better lives, based on their personal data. The research subscribes to a mindset of enabling, `nudging\´ and prompting consumers to become `smart\´ through the use of their personal data vs the conventional thinking of making smart products and/or devices. Personal data can be a valuable asset for consumers to use and trade with product and service providers (businesses) in exchange for better-customised products and services or even cash rewards; and for product and service providers who, by creating more customised products/services in a scalable way through the platform, could increase customer value and thereby improve revenues.
