  • Abstract
The paper presents an integrated multicast service architecture (IMS) for the management of connection and mobility in wireless ATM networks. To ensure portability and interoperability in the heterogeneous ATM networks, the architecture is realized in compliance with the common object request broker architecture (CORBA) standard and implemented using Java language. The integrated multicast service architecture comprises six CORBA agents, collaborating to manage network resources and thus guarantee the quality of services (QoS) for multicast communications. A mobile terminal can access the services provided by these agents via a set of pre-defined CORBA interfaces to control and manage the virtual channels in the ATM switches. The CORBA middle-ware transparently passes the invocation from mobile terminals upon the IMS agents to execute connection establishments and to update location information and perform the handoff procedures when mobile terminals migrate. To achieve seamless mobility for multicast, the procedures for crossover switch discovery, QoS re-negotiation, and cell synchronization are proposed and implemented as primitives in the IMS architecture
