  • Abstract
The Long-term Estuary Assessment Group (LEAG) is a government-academia-industry partnership focused on the lower Mississippi River and Gulf of Mexico. Under the leadership of the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO); the Center for Bioenvironmental Research (CBR) at Tulane and Xavier Universities; and COTS Technology, LLC, LEAG brings together a diverse team of experts to address a broad scope of river-estuary-gulf issues. Created in 1999, LEAG leverages the collective strengths of its members to address significant regional issues having national importance. This collective effort will develop observational and predictive tools to provide local, regional, and national policy and decision makers with decisive information that can be applied to remedial efforts benefiting the Mississippi River/Gulf of Mexico estuary system. By using this natural laboratory, the LEAG will improve the capability of the United States to monitor the risk of exposure to toxicants in systems throughout the world
