Abstract :
We propose a channel assignment strategy to prioritize handoff calls in multi-rate mobile microcellular networks. This strategy is based on the non-handoff failure system and employs the novel concept of intra-cluster channel reassignment. Simulation results reveal that large bandwidth traffic classes are blocked or forced to terminate more often than small bandwidth traffic classes. In our proposed strategy the channels may be kept in use in the target cell with high probability when a handoff occurs. In this way, the handoff failure probability is significantly reduced. Also, the channel change probability at cell crossing is reduced. Because of the channel sharing between cells, our strategy adapts better than the fixed channel assignment (FCA) to the time variant non-uniform traffic characteristic of the microcellular networks
