  • Abstract
This paper reports the characteristics of our proposed prototype Optical Parametric Diffuser (OPD). To improve the conversion bandwidth and efficiency of Four-wave Mixing (FWM) in a semiconductor optical amplifier, the gain bandwidth is spread and the gain peak wavelength is set to a wavelength near the FWM signal on the short-wavelength side. As a result, a high conversion efficiency (better than -20 dB) was obtained across a detuning wavelength bandwidth of 43 nm. We think this effect comes from combining different MQW active layers. An OPD can also be used as an optical amplifier The fiber-to-fiber gain is 14.6 dB, and the gain bandwidth is 124 nm. Finally, an optical sampling experiment measuring 160-Gbit/s optical pulse data using an OPD produced a clear waveform
