Abstract
The authors discuss fault arcing in a MV transformer substation with a comparison between SF6 and air insulated switchgear. The work is concentrated on the overpressure (pressure rise) in the cable and transformer compartments. There is reason to believe that pressure rise should be higher with SF6 compared to air. Full scale tests have shown that the maximum pressure rise is about equal for SF6 and air, but with a significantly longer duration of the pressure rise in the case of SF6. It has been found difficult to simulate practical conditions by small scale model tests
