Abstract :
Since the advent of improved satellite and cable services, HF radio is increasingly being used to provide short and medium distance communications, especially between mobile or transportable stations. The propagation characteristics for these shorter links require the use of correctly chosen frequencies and antennas which radiate at the angle of elevation which is necessary. It is clear from the parameters which are currently being specified for antennas for these links, that engineers who are specifying equipment are not very familiar with the exact characteristics which are needed. It is the objective of this paper to examine the operational requirements and to determine the characteristics which suitable antennas must provide. A number of simple antenna designs are then reviewed for their suitability for use is lightweight transportable systems.<>
