Abstract
The need for a Pan-European network depends on the development of wide- and broadband applications and customer demand. The paper surveys demand forecasts for various applications and cost predictions for network elements as well as the available and emerging technologies and trends in network evolution. The paper highlights the various factors likely to influence the evolution towards a Pan-European network.
