Abstract
The intent of this book is to create a reference to cover the essential aspects of a wide range of topics in a way that is accessible and provides good quality references to additional works in this area. The book is split into ten parts and 35 chapters covering topics ranging from policy relating to renewables all the way through to situational awareness in the control room. Whereas other books in this arena can focus singularly on a specific technology, this book places the transition to renewables into the overall systemwide context. As a result, some of the topics covered are not just beneficial to areas experiencing growth in wind and solar generation but as an overview in the state of the art of techniques to manage variability and uncertainty, today and in the future. The earlier chapters of the book are devoted to the policy driving the energy transition, with notable emphasis on experience in Europe, the United States, Africa, and India. Issues such as market integration are examined in the context of growing renewable generation. The book illustrates how markets are evolving to become more adept at integrating renewables through new ancillary services and the adaption of existing market rules.
