Abstract :
For publication date: August 2016. Energy efficiency has been a major objective of the communications research community for many years, but recently there has been a major focus on energy efficient systems and networks. There have been a number of major international research projects and initiatives, which has studied how energy consumption can be reduced significantly in both wired and wireless networks. Communications systems are also critical in saving energy in emerging cyber-physical systems, such as the smart grid. Further, energy harvesting techniques, including extracting energy from ambient wireless signals, will have a major role in future information technology systems in general. The objective of this special issue is to present new research in this area, exploring all aspects of green communications.
