  • Abstract
The whole concept of a career is wrapped around being paid. We seem to accept that if it is worth doing, it´s worth getting paid for. Usually, we measure how much our work contribution is worth by how much we get paid. That leads to the incorrect conclusion that volunteering is worthless! That doesn´t ring true because even in capitalist America, 62.5 million Americans (nearly 1 in 4) volunteered time that totaled 7.7 billion hours in 2013. And that doesn´t account for the informal personal volunteering they did in their community when no one was watching.
