Abstract
The Internet was designed to serve asynchronous applications such as World Wide Web, email, and tile transferring, but recently it has been frequently used for the real time transmissions of audio and video. A lot of measurements of the backbone Internet traffic have been performed in order to identify the traffic characteristics. Some studies have been preformed on the streaming video such as real video application. In this paper, we present the approach in measuring the Windows Media Services streaming video over the Internet. We have developed the WMPStat, a tool for measuring the application level parameters of the Windows Media service. We present the results of measuring the correlation between the application and network layer traffic of streaming video. We have identified the parameters that influence the perceptual quality of the previewed video.
