Abstract :
The method of approximate Lagrangians (MAL) is explained in general terms. The method is substantially equivalent to the RPG (Rosen-Prigogine-Glansdorff) method and yet conceptually different from it. The approach taken not only provides the RPG-method with a variational basis, but provides a variational basis for Galerkin´s method as well. Its relation to Galerkin´s nonvariational method is pointed out. The application of MAL to Van der Pol´s equation is explained in principle.
