Abstract :
The most obvious example of fleet management is the public transport sector, where the size of bus fleets often are counted in thousands. The need to organise, optimise and monitor the fleet is obvious and this is traditionally conducted in a labour-intensive fashion. Automising these tasks is getting more and more critical with the increasing need to transport people in the evergrowing urban areas and the availability of on-board computers for data capture and ticketing purposes makes this feasible. However, to benefit from the extensive amounts of data collected one naturally needs to communicate these from the vehicles to the central computing and administrative centres for evaluation. The method that the PREMID system offers to solve this problem is in the use of an innovative modem tag, where it is possible to communicate with the tag both via the fast microwave link and via a serial R485 link that can be connected to the on-board computer.
