  • Abstract
The state-of-the-art of information technologies as well as networking in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are a direct inheritance from dependence on the ex-USSR. The authors deal with networking. The existing technological background is described. The networking activity in the Soviet period and during the last few years are reviewed starting from ACADEMNET and till FIDOnet, Internet-UUCP, EARN/BITNET and X.400. Presented traffic statistics show that the traffic generated by UUCP-node via 2400 b/s modem lines can be comparable with X.400 traffic for all countries. Possible networking alternatives are discussed. The BALTBONE project is presented.
