Abstract
An application of fuzzy logic to control the position of a load coupled to the output shaft of a gearbox is presented. The primer mover of the gearbox is a DC machine which is supplied by a chopper circuit. The elaboration and tuning of the fuzzy logic controller (FLC) is based on a sliding mode control (SMC) approach. The results are presented in comparative terms among the FLC, SMC and the classical proportional-integral-derivative controller (PID). In this application, the FLC proves to be better than the PID because the PID is highly sensitive to the load changes (torque changes), while the FLC is almost insensitive.
