Abstract :
A new predictive video-coding technique, using fractal-image compression for intraframe coding and second order geometric transformations for motion compensation in interframe predictive coding, is presented. In order to reduce the amount of data required to digitally transmit or store a sequence of images, a method describing the subsequent images as a set of geometric transformations of parts of the previous images, is used. For that purpose, the first image in the sequence and the difference between the predicted and the actual new image are fractal-coded using blockwise contractive affine transformations. For motion compensation second order geometric transformations, compensating for translation, rotation, zooming, uneven stretching, and any combination of these, has been used. The decoded images can be displayed at arbitrary resolution without blockiness, which, together with the very high compression ratio achievable, is the most important advantage of the fractal-based image coding technique over the standard DCT-based image coding.
