Abstract
Videoconferencing makes complex communications tasks easier-especially when combined with interactive graphics and document sharing. The author describes the components and capabilities of current videoconferencing systems, current commercial applications, and current and future military command and control application areas. He also outlines new compression technologies and network management issues that, when available, will lower required data rates and make videoconferencing available to more military units under battlefield conditions.
