Ventilatory assistance using electrical stimulation of abdominal muscles

The feasibility of electrically stimulating the abdominal muscles during normal ventilation was studied. It was found that by triggering stimulation synchronized to expiratory airflow at the mouth, tidal volume was increased. The possibility of obtaining control over the passive expiratory phase in patients on mechanical ventilation is discussed.
