Abstract :
Spectrally efficient duobinary and single-sideband (SSB) intensity-modulated formats are analyzed for the first time to the author´s knowledge as downstream signals in wavelength division multiplexing passive optical networks. Back-to-back sensitivity penalty, as well as dispersion, optical signal-to-noise ratio, and dispersion penalties are calculated and compared. Good 2.5 Gb/s remodulation performance is achieved with the 10 Gb/s SSB formats with small extinction ratio and with duobinary formats with the high electrical transmitter bandwidth. Better transmission system performance for both format types than the one of the standard non-return-to-zero format is shown due to the better dispersion tolerance.
