  • Abstract
The research presented in this paper is focused on the technology and the business model provided for the modernization of the incumbent wireline carrier´s infrastructure, especially on the evolutionary PSTN Emulation approach. With the deployment of the described PSTN Emulation approach, the carrier can take the opportunity to reuse its existing access network, replace obsolete technology and bring the broadband network to a new service level, thus preventing the migration trends of the users to other (mobile) carrier(s). In addition, several parameters for the calculation of operational expenditure (i.e., existing support charges, power consumption, workforce expenses, migration to IP, etc.) and investment to encourage this approach were also taken into account. Moreover, the business case for the PSTN Emulation approach in two different periods (2009 and 2012) will be calculated and compared with the PSTN simulation approach.
