Abstract
The paper discusses possibility of utilising the nonlinear optical properties of liquid crystals (LCs) for laser beam intensity measurements. The presented idea is based on optical phenomena which have been just recently observed in liquid-crystalline media possessing periodically stratified structure. The effects appear by activating light intensities of the order of MW/m/sup 2/, so the method can be potentially applied at present to power laser monitoring (corresponding laser power is approximately 0.1 W).
