Abstract :
In this paper we analyse demographic problems and propose a solution for taking care of elderly in Europe. We present the nearly completed system for posture and movement recognition in the European FP7 project CONFIDENCE - Ubiquitous Care System to Support Independent Living. CONFIDENCE aims at providing care for the elderly using radio tags attached to the body providing positions and acceleration. The central part of the system deals with the reconstruction and interpretation of the user´s behaviour in order to raise an alarm or issue a warning if a fall or an unusual mid- or long-term behaviour is detected. In this paper, the two systems are presented from the user. The first results and demonstrations show supreme performance; however, the costs of the research prototype surpass acceptability for a normal end-user. Cheaper commercial versions will be developed to help elderly live better.
