Abstract :
The intention of this paper is to draw attention to difficulties in teaching complex concepts in engineering studies, such as the concepts in electromagnetism. To successfully reach the expected learning outcomes, large percentage of students should have better pre-knowledge of mathematics and physics. The paper discusses possible causes of insufficient a priori knowledge of technical-university students. In particular, it highlights the problem of large number of courses in secondary schools in Croatia and the problem of mainly procedural way of teaching mathematics (i.e. the problem of lacking the conceptual knowledge).
