Abstract :
A new instrument to measure asymmetrical power is presented. The theoretical basis for this measurement will be explained. The need for such an instrument arises in 3-phase net with asymmetrical loads. Although asymmetrical power measurement has been considered by several authors in recent years, an appropriate measuring instrument has not been proposed so far. A commercially marketed device, which directly measures the asymmetrical power in the grid, is not available. Devices which measure and monitor the degree of asymmetrical power in power grid, provide important and useful information about asymmetry in power nets. Knowledge of the asymmetrical power allows the energy to be distributed in a more economical way. Moreover, the power can then be managed in such a way that the quality of the energy will not be degraded by asymmetrical loads. Sometimes switching on or off of some loads can be controlled without any undesirable effect. Measurement of the power of asymmetry is the first step in regulating the use of this type of asymmetrical power. Furnaces based on switching arc phenomena are typical examples of loads which cause large asymmetry in the grid.
