Abstract :
This work develops an intelligent defense mechanism, system protection plan, and an alarm strategy for isolated island systems with a high penetration of wind power. An intelligent forecasting system that can effectively predict the frequency response of a system to a system contingency is designed. The forecasts can assist in planning system protection strategies, including rescheduling generators, increasing the number of diesel generator units, or implementing an optimized low-frequency load shedding strategy. The simulation results herein reveal that these proposed forecasting models can accurately estimate the lowest frequency, the rate of change of frequency, and the minimum load shedding during stable operation. Actual island systems are considered as examples to elucidate the feasibility of the proposed defense system and the accuracy of forecasting. The results in this study can provide system operators with a valuable reference that can help in preventive dispatch and the planning of load shedding.
