Abstract :
In this paper, the effectiveness of Static Var Compensator (SVC) and Static Compensator (STATCOM) on power system transient stability enhancement is assessed by implementing controller design theory. The main circuit configuration and models of the devices are introduced in the work. The paper proposes a control scheme to increase the system damping and improve the system response; then employs Differential Evolution (DE) optimization algorithm for optimal tuning of the proposed controller. Nonlinear time domain simulation based on multi-objective function is formulated to minimize the time-weighted errors in order to damp the system oscillations, which are inherent in the nonlinear system model. An interconnected power system equipped with both devices, one at a time, is discussed in this paper. The system response is examined under different disturbances. The results are presented and compared. The results show increased damping of low frequency oscillations with STATCOM as compared to SVC.
