Abstract
Most approaches to model interference in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) focus primarily on establishing the basic conditions for successful communication between two nodes. However, no attempt has been made to devise models that arrest the propagation of interference-laden transmissions right at the source. As a consequence, faulty transmissions pervade the WSN, and the nodes are forced to receive fault ridden data. Even if the nodes detect the fault after decoding the received data before deciding to reject it, considerable amount of time and energy is spent in terms of cost overheads like processing time, network throughput and energy consumption. To tide over these problems, a new holistic framework to stem the flow of faulty transmissions has been developed. The Composite Interference Mapping (CIM) model introduced in this paper, maps potential interference faults for all active links in the network. A new Time Division Multiple Frequency (TDMF) approach has been established to determine an Interference Fault-free Transmission (IFFT) schedule for all active links. Composite Interference-based Transmission Scheduling (CITS) algorithm based on CIM and TDMF is developed to maximize network throughput. The completeness of the CIM model in providing a comprehensive interference map of the WSN is analytically proved. To support the concepts introduced, analytical validation of TDMF is presented in the paper. The CIM model may well pioneer a new thought process in generating IFFT schedule for all active links in WSN and trigger the development of a host of applications.
