Abstract :
In this paper, we propose a novel parameterized rendering method for fast generating multi resolution terrain structure, by integration of both point-based and polygon-based models. In this rendering approach, terrain surface is projected to parameter plane, which is then made into geometrical images through regular sampling, P-Quad trees is a quad tree multi-resolution hierarchical structure based on these geometrical images. In the rendering process, coarse polygon meshes will be applied to render the surface that faces the viewer by traversing the quad tree, while the shading details can be achieved with normal mapping. Besides, the high-frequency terrain detail can be fined with the control of point-dependent Level of Detail and rendered by points. In this way, the rendering of highly detailed model can be accelerated by hardware. Meanwhile, excellent visual effects at both the terrain surface and details are guaranteed.
