Abstract :
This paper studies human reaction time to six different stimulus modalities while standing and while walking: visual, auditory, vibration on the toe, vibration on the thigh, vibration on the waist, and vibration on the wrist. The modalities were chosen as possible means of sensory feedback for a smart lower limb prosthesis. Reaction times were measured from start of stimulus to press of a hand-held button. Results show that the reaction times while standing were comparable for all modalities, but walking disproportionately affects perception of the thigh and toe stimuli.
