Abstract :
Vacuum circuit breakers (VCBs) have been developed and widely used all over the world. In this paper advancements in the vacuum circuit breakers have been reviewed considering the role and effect of Axial Magnetic Field (AMF) on the functional capabilities of the vacuum circuit breaker. Starting from, the introduction of Axial Magnetic Fields into the electrodes to the present modified and newly developed AMF electrodes, its construction, comparison with spiral type electrode and improved effectiveness has been discussed. Arcing modes have also been discussed during the interrupting process. This paper reviews the importance of AMF in the fast operation and improved performance, stability and current interrupting capability of vacuum circuit breakers.
