Abstract :
This paper talks about implementation of a wireless system between two nodes using only physical layer of IEEE 802.15.4 standard with minimum required MAC (medium access control) functionalities such as data transmission and acknowledgement. This is done with an aim to gain complete control over individual layers of IEEE 802.15.4 standard. Once individual layers are controlled, customized algorithms can be implemented in the MAC layer to have better control over power, data rates, energy efficiency, distance etc. Based on physical layer, wireless network between nodes has been established and number of packets transmitted, received signal strength indicator (RSSI), packet error rate (PER), and transmission power of transmitter has been obtained at the receiver. These parameters will be used in future to configure the transmitter node by auto-configuring the transmission power required with respect to distance, thus minimizing the power consumption. The wireless system has been tested/implemented for TI-MSP430F5438 experimenter board and TI-SmartRF05EB along with CC2520 transceiver for both boards.
