Abstract :
In India it is estimated that around 250 million tons of biomass is available. A large percentage of this is available bio-mass can be used for energy conversion. Coconut shell, ground nut husk and coffee husk are used for energy conversions which are abundantly present in India. Similar to coal pulverization these husks can be pulverized and blended with fuel oil or water or with method to form slurry fuel. In this present work pulverized coconut shell powder was blended with high speed diesel oil. A number of samples were prepared by blending coconut shell powder in different ratios with high speed diesel oil. These samples were tested for their properties and used as fuel for running four stroke compression ignition engines. The load test were conducted on two engines of the make. The investigations revealed that the slurry can be burnt without modifications in the existing engine setup except for bypassing the fuel filter. The maximum amount of powder that could be loaded was up to 30% by weight and the grain size of particles was less than 45 microns. It may be possible to load higher percentage of the solid fuel preheating the slurry. The result showed that the engine have lesser brake specific fuel consumption and better break thermal efficiency compared to high speed as diesel as fuel under all conditions. The variation of air-fuel ratio with load was recorded. The blocking nozzle and erosion of injector nozzle hole was observed. It may be possible to overcome the blocking problem by chemical stabilization of slurry fuel. The experience shows that slurry fuel may be potential fuel for the stationary Compression Ignition Engines. This paper presents the Automatic Pollution Control through alternate fuel for C.I. Engines.
